Fern is our tiny 29-pound Dalmatian doll and one of the sweetest little dogs you could ever meet—at least with the two people she has chosen as her own.

Her life did not begin with love. Fern came from a horrific breeding situation where she was chained to a tree with a chain that weighed more than she did. She was surrounded by dead dogs, severely underweight, neglected, and waiting to be used for breeding. Because she was smaller than what they wanted, she was simply left there.

When I arrived to rescue her, Fern’s head was lying in the dirt. She looked like she had already given up. I picked her up, carried her to the car, and brought her home. That was the day her life of survival ended and her story of love began.

Fern is now about two and a half years old and has been with us for a year. She has struggled to trust people outside of our immediate family and has also developed seizures that require careful monitoring and ongoing care.

She is deeply attached to my husband and me and sleeps tucked between us every single night. We tried to help her build relationships with other people, but Fern made it clear that she had already chosen her family.

Because of her medical needs, her history, and the bond she has with us, Fern will remain a permanent member of the Fighting for Paws Forever Pack. She will never again wonder whether she is safe, wanted, or loved.

Not every Forever Pack dog comes from obvious abuse. Sometimes, the damage comes from being given up on again and again.

Mango had been passed from home to home before she came to us. She worked with trainers, tried different routines, and even lived in homes where people attempted to medicate her because they could not handle her constant barking and anxiety. Everyone wanted to “fix” Mango, but what she really needed was a place where she could finally feel safe.

Mango is quite the character. She does not enjoy sharing attention with other people or dogs, especially when she is away from home. Car rides and public outings send her anxiety through the roof. The barking becomes constant, and she simply cannot relax.

Here on the mountain, Mango is different. She has adjusted to the quiet mountain life, found a select group of dog friends she trusts, and learned that she does not have to be on alert all the time. She is still independent, particular, and very much Mango—but she is finally comfortable.

We realized that forcing her to become a public, social dog was not what was best for her. Mango did not need another home to try to change her. She needed a home willing to accept her exactly as she is.

The mountain is Mango’s safe place, and Fighting for Paws will be her forever home.

Little Lily has been part of Fighting for Paws since the very beginning.

She originally came to us with her sister Greta, who has since found her forever home. Later, their sister Bailey joined the rescue too—but Little Lily was the one who started it all.

Lily was surrendered to the shelter for being too fearful. She would hide underneath the bed or press herself into the back corner, trying to disappear. As her fear grew, she became mouthy and difficult for people to understand. Eventually, no one wanted to take a chance on her.

Then she came here.

Over time, Little Lily found her confidence and discovered her purpose. Today, she is the protector and watcher of every rescue dog that enters the property. She keeps an eye on the dogs, watches over the land, and makes sure everything stays exactly where it belongs.

Lily may still be cautious, but she is brave, loyal, and deeply devoted to her pack. She has become one of the most important dogs on the mountain—the one who quietly watches over everyone else.

Little Lily is not waiting for another home. She is already home, and she will always have a place in the Fighting for Paws Forever Pack.
